The Unit disseminates information on its research findings through publications, conference presentations and seminars.
In 1999, the Unit successfully lead-managed and tendered for a competitive grant advertised by the State Government of Victoria to establish a unit to support the information needs of food companies in the State.
A separate unit, Food Intelligence, has been established within the Food Marketing Research Unit. The
Unit's mission is to research and provide timely and succinct information that would help develop a
competitive and viable food industry in Victoria.
Broadly, the Unit evaluates on an on-going basis the following matters pertaining to the food sector:
- product-market opportunities and threats;
- changes in production technology and agronomic practices;
- changes in packaging and distribution technology;
- food consumption and industry trends worldwide; and
- major food industry events such as training programs, exhibitions and conferences.
Food Intelligence disseminates information to food companies in the State through:
- publishing and distributing a fortnightly bulletin, Food Industry Information Briefs;
- organising presentations on key industry issues, opportunities and threats;
- publishing reviews of food industry sectors;
- providing information on product-market opportunities in a web site; and
- facilitating networking and collaborative activities by food companies in the State.
In the longer term, the Unit aims to extend the services of the Unit to other states and territories in Australia.
