A number of small scale rigs have been constructed to allow investigation of various aspects of fire development and smoke movement. These rigs are used for both student demonstration and research.
Rigs for studying fire development include a 3m x 1m x 0.5m steel box with openable sides and glazing
to allow observation of burning, and a similar 8m x 2m x 0.5m rig that is currently being used for a
research project. The rate of pyrolysis within the rig is measured at various locations with mass balances.
The model four stories building (3m x 2.5m x 2m) incorporate stair, lift and service shafts and allows for various floor openings. The rig has been used to study the flow of smoke through floor openings and the influence of natural roof venting and extraction.
