The Centre offers the following post-graduate courses:
- Graduate Certificate in Performance-Based Building and Fire Codes
(one year part-time) - Graduate Diploma in Building Fire Safety and Risk Engineering
(two years part-time or one additional year part-time following certificate) - Master of Engineering in Building Fire Safety and Risk Engineering
- Master of Engineering (research)
- Doctor of Philosophy
Graduate Certificate
The course is a pre-requisite for building certifiers in the State of Victoria who intend to undertake
certification of fire-safety engineering submissions for buildings. The Graduate Diploma course is
recognised as an appropriate academic qualification in fire-safety engineering for persons seeking
registration in the various States and Territories as building practitioners in fire-safety engineering.
Graduate Certificate in Performance-Based Building and Fire Codes
This course consists of lectures and assignments undertaken on a part-time basis over one year.
Lectures and practical classes are undertaken by students during four 4 day sessions over the year
and assignments are submitted on a regular basis. The course is aimed at giving an understanding
of the underlying principles of fire-safety engineering and an introduction into most aspects of fire
science and technology.
Graduate Diploma in Building Fire Safety and Risk Engineering
The pre-requisite for this course is normally the Graduate Certificate or equivalent. The course consists
of two intensive 9 day sessions per year during which detailed technical information is presented
regarding fire technology, risk assessment and the behaviour of fire-safety systems. A key part of this
course is a major design that requires students to put into practice their knowledge of fire-safety
engineering design.
Master of Engineering in Building Fire Safety and Risk Engineering (Coursework)
The degree is given for the submission of a research thesis following completion of the Graduate Diploma.
It is expected that this will take an additional year on a part-time basis.
