Psychology Clinic:

Services Available:

The Psychology Clinic provides a broad range of psychological services to people in the general community. Both Clinical Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology services are offered. Clinical Psychology can involve assessment and treatment for a wide variety of psychological difficulties and includes counselling or psychotherapy for problems that are part of everyday life.

Some examples are:

  • personal distress
  • grief, illness, separation 
  • relationship problems 
  • family difficulties 
  • school difficulties 
  • anxiety and depression
  • child behaviour problems.

Clinical Neuropsychology:

Focuses on the relationship between brain function and a person's feelings or behaviour. It can provide assessment and treatment or rehabilitation of:

  • learning difficulties
  • head injuries
  • stroke and epilepsy
  • return to work problems after injury, infection or neurosurgery.

Sometimes both types of services may be used in the assessment and/or treatment of particular clients.

How to use this service:

Referrals can be via telephone or letter and may be made by local agencies, doctors, nurses, health professionals or teachers. Or You may ring the Clinic directly and discuss referring yourself or a family member with the Clinic Co-ordinator. An initial discussion with the Clinic Co-ordinator may help you decide whether the Clinic can provide the services required. If referral to other services is needed, advice can be given about this.

Once a referral is made, a clinic worker contacts the client to arrange a first appointment at a mutually convenient time. Appointments are sometimes scheduled after office hours. All services are provided by appointment only and a letter confirming the first appointment is usually sent within a few days.

NOTE: The Clinic does not provide medical treatment or a crisis intervention service. Also it does not provide assessment reports or treatment in the medico-legal domain.

Facilities:

The Psychology Clinic is linked with the School of Psychology and has provided services since 1993. It reflects the commitment of Victoria University to its local community. The Clinic consists of eight consulting rooms and relevant amenities including wheelchair accessible ground level entrance, toilet facilities adapted for persons with disabilities, and adjacent parking. All the consulting rooms are fitted with modern audiovisual equipment that is regularly used in working with clients.

Fees:

The Clinic works on a fee for service basis. Fees are on a sliding scale according to income. This ensures that the Clinic services are accessible to all. Clients are advised by the Clinic Co-ordinator during the initial telephone contact about the actual fee payable. Sometimes clients are funded by other organisations or services.

Clinic Staff:

The Clinic Directors are Professor Sandra Lancaster  and Dr Alan Tucker and the day to day management of the Clinic is provided by the Clinic Co-ordinator Associate Professor Jenny Sharples. Most of the Clinic services are provided by specialist psychologists in training, who are studying for a Masters  or Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology or Clinical Neuropsychology at Victoria University. All psychological work is supervised by registered, qualified and highly experienced psychologists.

Research:

The Clinic is also a research facility for the School of Psychology. Staff may invite the participation of individual clients in some research projects conducted in the School. The School of Psychology collaborates with other services and organisations in research that contributes to knowledge and the psychological health of the community.
