The School of Communication and the Arts is committed to providing an education relevant to a rapidly changing contemporary world. We prepare students for a global and digital future by complementing the skills and knowledge traditional to arts courses with the knowledge and skills generated by new media and digital technologies.
Our students develop skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and researching and expressing ideas and information. Simultaneously, they are also encouraged to develop a range of complementary skills - including creative thinking and practice, teamwork skills, digital and visual literacies, and cultural and ethical awareness - that will prepare them well for employment in the rapidly changing workplaces in Australia and internationally.
The School offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs to higher education students across five campuses in Melbourne and also offshore with partner institutions, such as Sunway University College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The international outlook of the school is strongly reflected in the opportunities provided for students to participate in international student exchange and other overseas study experiences, and in the emphasis placed on language acquisition and development both in English and other languages.
With 30 core academic staff ably assisted by a team of about 30 part-time lecturers, many of whom are industry professionals, the school's programs span seven areas:
- Languages (Advanced English for Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese,
Japanese, Spanish, Vietnamese) - Professional Writing and Literary Studies
- Communication and Media Studies
- Language and Communication in Professional Contexts
- Gender Studies
- Public Relations
- Multimedia
The school teaches more than one thousand students each year and has a strong reputation for the quality of teaching it provides, regularly scoring well in the annual Australian government sponsored course experience questionnaire and in surveys of the quality of postgraduate supervision.
