Shared Housing
Many students share an apartment or house with other students as this is the cheapest housing option.
To find a Share House, ring the people listed on the Housing Data Base and organised a time to meet. Visit more than one share house to compare households types and value for money.
Your rent includes your own bedroom and share use of the kitchen, bathroom, lounge and laundry. You may need to find/loan/buy a bed and a desk. As a 'household' you will either shop-cook together or seperate. Everyone (including partners/visitors) are responsible for cleaning the apartment or house. Everyone (including partners/visitors) are responsible for paying their share of the rent and utility bills. Each person pays their own Internet and telephone bills. You need to ask permission to use other occupant's furniture and/or whitegoods.

An apartment is a fully furnished flat with bedroom(s), bathroom, kitchen, dining and communal laundry. All furniture is provided including bed, desk, table, chairs, sofa, stove, fridge and microwave. Apartments may also have lamps, cable television, video, alarm system, cooking utensils (including kettle, rice cooker, toaster), cutlery, plates, telephone/internet sockets. You need to ask if linen (sheets, towels, blankets) is provided.
Renting your own 1-bedroom apartment can be very expensive so many students tend to share a 2 or 3-bedroom apartment. Shared renting means that each student has their own locked bedroom and shares the kitchen, etc. Apartments are often professionally cleaned weekly as part of your rent or for a small additional cost. Apartments are often located in a complex with photocopy, fax, recreational & food outlets. Apartment fees often do not include any meals.
Hostels are either owned, fully or partially, by a university OR private owner. You often need to pay a non-refundable application fee and a non-refundable one-off amenities/service fee and a refundable bond (4 weeks rent).
In a hostel, you can rent your own locked bedroom (single room) or share a bedroom with other students of the same sex (dorm room). It costs extra to have your own bathroom so most students share a male or female bathroom (showers & toilet). Bedrooms are usually furnished with a bed, wardrobe, table & chair and lamp. You often need to bring your own sheets & towels, or hire for a small charge. Students share the kitchen(s), dining room(s), coin-operated laundry(s), telephones/internet, etc. Most hostels usually have a café where you can buy meals and the larger hostels often have gyms, bars, travel agents, and business facilities.
