Victoria University will this year be a "Partner" for Australia's largest annual multi-sport event, the 2008 Australian University Games (AUG). The games will be held over the semester 2 break (28th September - 3rd October 2008) and will include up to 28 individual and team sports attracting over 6,000 participants from Universities across the country and overseas.
Since its inception in 1993, the Australian University Games (AUG) has grown to be Australia largest annual multi-sport event, renowned for providing a friendly but competitive environment for Australia university athletes. As the flagship event on the national university sporting calendar the Games are recognised as the perfect opportunity to provide university athletes, many of whom are of Olympic standard, the chance to compete against each other in a national multi-sport event. As such the Games has built up a reputation as a not-to-be-missed, event!
The AUG has also been a recipient of two key industry awards. In 2001 the event was recognised for its contribution to the Australian sporting landscape when it won the NSW Sports Award for Event of the Year. In 2005 the Games won the prestigious Event of the Year at the Queensland Sports Federation Sport Awards.
VU has a proud history at the AUG competing against larger more established Universities. After a mighty collective performance in Brisbane in 2006 earned them the highly coveted John White "Spirit of the Games" Shield and strong performances across many sports on the Gold Coast in 2007, Sport and Fitness Manager Tim Lee says "VU are gearing up for bigger things in 2008 and is looking to field the largest team ever with close to 300 competitors and team officials expected to attend. Staff and students will be also invited to attend the Opening Ceremony and to support the various teams and individual athletes representing the University during the games."
The University is very proud and excited to partner an event of this scale, not only does it provide increased sporting and student development opportunities but enables the University community to benefit in many ways form volunteer and work placements to showcasing some of our sporting facilities and generally being engaged in a range of marketing opportunities that further enhance the University's reputation.
A local AUG will mean increased sporting opportunities for VU students and participation in such events is one of the most rewarding experiences that University life can offer. Students are encouraged to get involved by registering their interest at www.vu.edu.au/sport
