Experience the Ener-G that is the 2008 Australian University Games Media Launch!
Be part of the largest annual multi-sport event in Australia and get involved in the Media Launch for the 2008 Australian University Games!
When: 22 July 2008 from 9am to 11am
Where: State Netball Hockey Centre, Royal Park
What's involved:
The media launch needs 200 students to volunteer some of their time to help create a memorable and impressionable event on the day. During the launch, volunteers will spell the words "UNI GAMES" on the court. This will be a photo opportunity for journalists and an exciting activity for students to be a part of. All students will then be involved in a short game of ultimate frisbee to show off the sport and create interest. After a short demonstration journalists and guests will then be invited to join in and learn more about the sport, as well as the overall event.
What you get:
You will be thanked with a free T-shirt, free lunch and a certificate of participation. This is also a great opportunity to be part of a large media launch (to put on the resume) and possibly interact with members of the media, Games stakeholders as well as senior university figures and there's always the chance to have your face on TV or in the paper.

VU - Western Lightning Netball 6 December 2007
Victoria University is pleased to announce the formation of our new State League Netball Club;
VU - Western Lightning. This is as a result of a merger between existing State League Clubs,
VU Flames and Altona Lightning. VU - Western Lightning will field teams in the 2008 State League Competition in all three divisions; Championship, Division 1 and Division 2, providing the Western region with elite netball representation.
Victoria University Flames Netball Team has merged with Altona Lightning
VU Sport Services Coordinator Scott Cashmere said "a number of players from both of the former State League clubs study at Victoria University and have represented VU at the annual Australian University Games. The partnership is a very positive one for all parties."
Tim Lee, VU Sport and Fitness Manager said he is "excited about the initiative shown by the respective clubs and looks forward to increasing the University's engagement with its surrounding communities and providing increased sporting opportunities."
Heather Neville, formerly the president of the VU Flames, is part of a six-member steering committee that would guide the Lightning through its formative months. She said an inaugural annual general meeting would be held early in 2008. ``Because of the organisation side of things, we thought it was best to initially have a small steering committee,'' Mrs Neville said.
``Once it (the club) is up and running we'll have a full committee put in place.''
The coach of the Championship Division team will be Joy Grubb, who took Altona to sixth place in the 2007 competition. Brenda Edgar, the coach of the Flames' Championship team that was relegated this year, will lead the Division 1 side, with Victorian men's squad members Andrew Simmons and Dan Cooke in charge of Division 2 matters.
Mrs Neville said Altona and VU Flames would remain separate entities at the lower senior grades and in the junior ranks, with a full-scale merger forecast for 2009.
Grubb, who had coached Altona for the previous 12 seasons, said the various playing rosters would be finalised by the end of January.
``It (the merger) is a bonus for both clubs. It allows VU players another opportunity to play in Championship and it allows us (Altona) to be strengthened,'' Grubb said. ``It's a marriage that works well for both parties.''
Both Grubb and Mrs Neville acknowledged that a motivating factor for the alignment was preparing a franchise that had a realistic hope of being accepted into a revamped statewide league in 2009.
Netball Victoria announced in August that a new competition, comprising 10 licences operating across one under-19 and two open divisions, would replace State League after 2008.
The State League's pre-season competition starts in March, and the season proper in April.
