A new video documentary 'Women in Harmony' will be launched at The Sun Theatre in Yarraville, on Tuesday 26 February at 6pm.
There will be a welcome by The Hon Nicola Roxon MP - Federal Minister for Health and Ageing.
Media are welcome to attend
The documentary offers a glimpse into the lives of three women living in Melbourne's western suburbs - Nan Myat Kyaw, Teresa Kau and Mary Weaven.
Nan was a secondary teacher in her homeland of Karen, between the Thai and Burmese border. She tells of the government persecution she and her family suffered.
Teresa Kau was a primary school teacher in Sudan before she was forced to flee with her family into the bush. She describes the horrors of life in Sudan during the civil war and her time in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.
Dr Mary Weaven is a lecturer in Education at Victoria University's Footscray Park Campus. She tells of the adoption of her three children from Ethiopia.
The documentary highlights the courage and strength of the three women. It also gives an insight into the Karen and Sudanese communities, with footage of a Sudanese wedding and a Karen wrist tying ceremony.
'Women in Harmony' was directed and produced by Sarah Tartakover, who teaches at VU's St Alban's Campus.
The video was made with funding from the Victorian Multicultural Commission's Women Creating Harmony grant, and auspiced by Yarraville Community Centre. The launch is sponsored by the Maribyrnong City Council.
