Water a hot topic at Sunbury
22 February 2008

The Head of Victoria University's Sunbury Campus, Dr Alistair Inglis said today that the University is proud to be associated with a community information session for Sunbury residents that will help learn more about the process of getting water to Sunbury, water conservation ideas and sustainable gardening.

The Sunbury Rotary Club will host the 2008 Sunbury Water Summit on Tuesday 11 March 2008.

Residents will be able to get the latest information on: the local water situation; gardening practices; what can be done to save water; and grants that are available to help save water.

Local businesses will also have display stalls with water saving products and services.

One of the guest speakers at the event will be Professor Stephen Grey, the Director of Victoria University's Institute for Sustainability and Innovation, who has 16 years experience researching water and wastewater treatment and sustainable water systems.

The Sunbury Rotary Club Water Summit initiative is supported by Victoria University, Western Water and Hume City Council.

Dr Inglis said: "Last year Victoria University and Western Water signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Part of that MoU is to undertake investigations into the effective promotion of alternative water supplies, such as recycled water, stormwater and greywater, in day-to-day operations. Supporting this event is one way we can help achieve that."

"I congratulate Rotary on this outstanding initiative. With 2007 being Victoria's hottest year on record and many parts of the State suffering from drought, it is certainly a most timely topic."
