VU graduations off and running at Flemington Racecourse

12 May 2008

For the first time, Victoria University will hold its graduation ceremonies at Flemington Racecourse, reflecting the University's strong commitment to Melbourne's western region.

About 2000 graduates will receive awards during eight ceremonies from May 27-30. Some 1250 will receive undergraduate degrees; nearly 200, postgraduate certificates, diplomas and masters' degrees; and 32 faculty doctorates and PhDs.

VU Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) Stephen Weller said the move from Melbourne's city centre to Flemington was a strategic decision, and incorporated the views of past graduates following satisfaction surveys.

He said: "We listened to what our graduates had told us, and considered a venue that was more easily accessible and less costly and difficult for parking. The Flemington Function Centre features free, ample parking for all graduates, family, guests and staff."

"The change to the new venue also aligns with the University's strategic positioning to build and foster strong community and industry partnerships in Melbourne's west."

Mr Weller said: "While graduations can be considered at the end of the spectrum in terms of learning experience, it still forms an important part of the experience."

"A significant number of VU graduates are the first in their families to go to university, so receiving a certificate, diploma, or degree is an important milestone for that student and their families."
