VU, University of Melbourne to support western region

13 May 2008

Joint Media Alert from: Victoria University and The University of Melbourne

Victoria University Vice Chancellor Professor Elizabeth Harman and The University of Melbourne Vice Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis will sign a groundbreaking agreement at 1.00pm on Friday May 16 at Victoria University's St Albans Campus.

Media are welcome to attend

Both universities have a strong history of providing educational opportunities to the communities of the west of Melbourne and have contributed to the education, health and well being of local people. Melbourne's west is now the fastest growing region in Melbourne and faces new challenges in terms of education, health and participation in active living.

Both universities have developed strong visions for their future and while these visions are very different they provide major opportunities for collaboration to improve outcomes in the west with an initial focus on five areas:

Nursing education and research;
Exercise science/rehabilitation and physiotherapy;
Health workforce e.g. diabetes prevention and amelioration;
Teacher education; and
 Educational transitions between, school, vocational and higher education.

Photo and vision opportunities:

Health demonstrations by nursing students

As part of the collaboration the universities will develop joint facilities like the Teaching, Training and Research Facility for the Sunshine Hospital, and share support for the Wyndham Vale selective High School.
